Emma Kohlmann evokes contemporary feminine mythology in her lush ink washes and watercolors, positioning images of plants, butterflies, and birds alongside enigmatic faces and figures.

Kohlmann has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including solo exhibitions at Jack Hanley Gallery, New York, NY; V1 Gallery, Copenhagen; NEVVEN Gallery, Gothenburg; and Kit Gallery, Tokyo. In 2021, she participated in Tom of Finland Foundation’s charitable auction Sexology 101. Kohlmann lives and works in Florence, MA.

I have been working on self-publishing for the past 10 years. It's been a way in which I have been able to connect with other artist peers, as well as give myself a place to showcase my work. One of the first places I saw Tom of Finland’s work was at one of the art book fairs in New York. I have always been infatuated with drawing and erotica. Leafing through the pages of Physique Pictorial was so amazing. I became so obsessed with Tom’s work, collecting my stash of those early zines. The figures I make in my own work have been influenced by these images. I feel like in some ways I memorialize them in my own work.
